Le Royal is a Raffles restoration of a 1920s French colonial hotel and arguably Phnom Penh's best (and most expensive!) lodging. Right on par with the Strand Hotel in Rangoon and the Raffles Hotel in Singapore, the Royal is upscale French colonial to the core. From the moment you step through the door you'll be pampered in period surroundings and ambiance. The restored period-style rooms are decorated with colonial furnishings but feature all the modern amenities you'd expect in a top-notch hotel. Each has a balcony facing the street or the courtyard. (Courtyard is quieter.) The bathrooms have both an antique claw foot tub and a separate, modern, glass-enclosed shower. The hotel also offers a spa and swimming pool. Even if you don't stay here, enjoy a drink and live piano music in the Elephant Bar in the evening!
